Trusted Alliance

Trigrams:Upper Water · falls into dangerLower Earth · yields

Reading it as a decision

Water settles naturally over earth here, finding every low place and filling it — the classical image for things and people drawn together without force. This is the hexagram of alliance: not a struggle to unite, but a natural pull toward it, a genuinely different situation than most others in this system. The text calls it auspicious outright, with one pointed warning: whoever shows up late, after everyone else has already committed, doesn't fare as well as the ones who commit early.

This reads as a position worth staying in — the classical line texts skew clearly favorable, and looking elsewhere for a better arrangement tends to cost more than it gains. The move that fits is leaning into the relationship, partnership, or team already in front of you, rather than holding out for a better option or hedging your commitment. Given the text's warning about latecomers, the version of this that goes wrong is usually hesitation — waiting too long to formally commit to an alliance that's already working.

The classical text

Bi: good fortune. A fresh divination shows lasting steadiness, no blame; the uneasy come to join, but whoever arrives last meets misfortune.

The six lines (爻辭)

Joining with sincerity, no blame; sincerity fills the jar to the brim, and something unexpected arrives in the end — good fortune.

Joining from within; steady and fortunate.

    Joining with the wrong people.

Joining from outside; steady and fortunate.

Joining made plain for all to see — the king hunts with beaters on three sides only, lets the game ahead run free, and his own people need no warning; good fortune.

Joining together with no leader at the head; misfortune.
