Hexagram 57
Gentle Persistence
xùn
Reading it as a decision
Two winds stack on top of each other here, wind above wind — nothing about this pattern is sudden or forceful. It's the shape of influence that works by continual, quiet contact rather than a single push: air finding every gap, water wearing down stone over time. The classical judgment describes only modest, partial gains at the outset, favorable when there's somewhere sustained to go and someone credible to follow. As a situation, this tends to show up when the direct route is blocked and the only real way in is repeated, patient contact.
The classical line texts here read closer to cautionary than confident, which is itself useful information: this isn't a moment to bet everything on one decisive move. What tends to work instead is treating the goal as something you return to and adjust rather than something you settle in a single attempt — push, notice what shifted, push again. Read enough times this way, the pattern classically eases toward steadier footing, the kind that comes from progress made in sequence rather than sheer persistence alone.
The classical text
Gentle penetration like wind slipping through gaps: modest success, favorable to set out and to see a great person.
The six lines (爻辭)
Wavering between advancing and retreating — steadied only by a soldier's firm resolve.
Bowing low beneath the bed, calling in priests and diviners in throngs — good fortune, no blame.
Submitting again and again, frowning each time — this brings humiliation.
Regret disappears; the hunting field yields three kinds of game.
Steadiness brings good fortune and no regret; a poor start turns into a good end, timed three days before and after the geng day.
Bowing beneath the bed, he loses his axe and his funds — persisting brings misfortune.
