Hexagram 12
Holding Pattern
pǐ
Reading it as a decision
This is the mirror image of open circulation: heaven above keeps rising, earth below keeps sinking, and the two move apart rather than meeting. The classical text doesn't soften it — more goes out than comes back, and the people or forces involved aren't currently working with you. It's the pattern of effort that isn't landing, communication that isn't closing the loop. Nothing about this is permanent, but right now the alignment isn't there, and pretending otherwise doesn't change the shape of it.
Even so, the strategic read is to hold this ground rather than abandon it or force a breakthrough — the position itself isn't the problem, and the better move is to maintain rather than escalate. Pull in scope, conserve what you have, and let the current stand rather than pushing against a resistance that isn't going to give right now. The line texts split evenly here, which lines up with the classical saying that closure eventually turns back toward openness — the difficulty is a phase, not a verdict, but it isn't over yet either.
The classical text
Holding Pattern: obstruction by unworthy men, unfavorable for a noble person's steadfastness; the great departs and the small arrives.
The six lines (爻辭)
Pulling up cogongrass, roots tangled together with it; steadfastness brings good fortune and success.
Embracing and submitting; the small-minded prosper, while the noble person accepts obstruction and succeeds through it.
Embracing shame.
Acting on a mandate brings no blame; companions attach themselves to good fortune.
Stagnation comes to rest; the great person finds good fortune. 'It may perish, it may perish' — tied fast to a clump of mulberry roots.
Stagnation topples over; first obstruction, then joy.
